Prouvençau e catouli, originally titled « À Nostro Damo de Prouvenço », is a hymn composed by Malachie Frizet in September 1875 for a competition held on the occasion of the inauguration of the Notre-Dame de Provence chapel in Forcalquier. Frizet won the competition and received a golden flower from the hands of Frédéric Mistral, which he then offered to the Virgin. The hymn closely ties Provençal identity to Catholic faith, in the spirit of the religious wing of the félibrige at the end of the nineteenth century. The text below reproduces the three verses and refrain available in the consulted source; it does not claim to restore the complete hymn as sung today.
