Notes
Magali is the most famous love song of Mirèio, Frédéric Mistral's Provençal epic published in 1859. In canto III, old Noro sings it to the young women gathered to strip silkworm cocoons. A young man presses his suit on the beautiful Magali; she evades him by transforming in turn into a fish, a bird, a flower, a cloud, and finally a nun, while he pursues her by taking the matching form each time, until she yields, moved by his constancy. This shape-shifting chase structure belongs to a very old stock of folk song, which Mistral took up and set in Mistralian verse. The text followed here is that of the 1861 edition; the poem Mirèio first appeared in 1859.
