Notes
This nouvè by Nicolas Saboly tells of a shepherd afflicted with fever and a sore leg who has his horse saddled to go see the Infant Jesus at Bethlehem, certain he will be healed in His presence. Published in 1668 in Saboly's first booklet of noëls in Avignon, it remains one of the most popular carols of the Provençal repertoire, still sung at Christmas today. The refrain 'Bouto sello, bouto sello' (saddle up, saddle up) evokes the military call ordering cavalrymen to saddle their horses.
