An, en, in, un, oun : nasal vowels, the consonant is heard
The groups an, en, in, un and oun stand for the vowels a, è, é, i, oo followed by a nasal resonance, and the nasal consonant is heard. Say in as "ine", un as "une", an as "ann", on as "onn", en as "ènn", and say it with the southern accent. The third person plural verb ending -on stays lighter.
Final n is pronounced, nasal and clear
Final n lets the nasal consonant be heard, clearly, with the values given in the nasal vowels rule above.
The verb ending -on of the third person plural is said "oun"
When the syllable on forms the third person plural ending of a conjugated verb, it is said with a soft nasal sound, "oun". The tonic stress then falls on the second-to-last syllable.
