Every letter is pronounced, except final consonants
First reading key : in Provençal, every written letter is pronounced. The one broad exception concerns final consonants, which generally stay silent.
G before e or i, and j in any position, are said "dj"
The letter g before e or i, and the letter j in any position, are said "dj", as in the English word "jogging". In some Rhodanian localities, this same sound is said "dz".
Ch is said "tch"
The group ch is always said "tch", as in the English word "chip". In some Rhodanian localities, this same sound is said "ts".
Gn is a soft "ny" sound, as in French
The group gn is a soft, palatal "ny" sound, exactly as in the French word "agneau" (lamb).
R is not rolled
Provençal r is not rolled, unlike what one might expect by comparison with other Romance languages. It is pronounced like the r of everyday French. It is a habit to correct, which no single word can illustrate.
