A very long time ago, literally when Jesus wore short trousers. Other Provençal expressions likewise place an ancient time through the childhood of religious figures : quand Berto fielavo, when Berthe was spinning, or quand Marto debanavo, when Martha was winding thread. With no school or history lessons, this was often the only ancient period people could pin down, all the more so since religion held an important place in daily life. There is also a touch of irreverent humor that Provençaux enjoy. Provençal legend even places the birth of Jesus in Provence, at Betelèn, and has his entourage land at the Saintes-Maries after fleeing Palestine.
