Hard to find a tinier measure, and the magpie doesn't have a good reputation: called a thief in French, and in Provençal an agasso also means a shrew, which reinforces the expression's contempt. Since the image is absurd, it passed into regional French only in its barely frenchified Provençal form, des parpelles d'agasses.
