The original Provençal expression says "a skin", not "a pot": the French variant with "pot" comes from a misunderstanding of the poorly grasped word. Pèu, "skin", extends by metaphor to the body and its behaviour, as in se lever la peau, "to wear oneself out". Si faire uno pèu means "to get drunk", and adding "of laughter" turned it into "to take a great dose of laughter". The construction mirrors se faire une fourre de rire, built on solid food rather than drink, since drunkenness, like a good meal, is fertile ground for this kind of laughter.
