Explanation
To be lucky. The expression goes back to an old belief: newborns whose skulls appeared covered with a piece of uterine membrane, said to be born with a caul, were thought to carry luck. In Provençal one says es neissu 'mé la crespino, born with the membrane, a word that became crespine in regional French rather than the butcher's term crépine, judged less flattering. A variant also exists, èstre crespinado, to be caul born.
